A bathroom tile installation needs more than a tile selection. Vule Tile helps plan shower walls, bathroom floors, niches and finishing details in Burlington, Oakville, Toronto and the GTA, with attention to the surfaces and waterproofing behind the tile.

Start with the bathroom layout

Tell us whether the work is a bathroom floor, tub surround, shower or complete renovation. Bring the room measurements, tile sample and any plumbing plans. Wall tile heights, shower niches, benches and exposed edges affect the layout and should be decided before installation.

Tile chosen for a wall is not automatically suitable for a floor. Ask the supplier about the intended use and traction of the exact product, particularly where the surface will get wet. Large wall tile and small shower-floor mosaics also have different layout and substrate requirements.

Water management behind the tile

Tile and grout alone should not be treated as a waterproof shower assembly. The wet-area plan needs to cover the backing, membrane or approved system, corners, penetrations and drain connection. Product compatibility and installation requirements depend on the system used.

Discuss waterproofing and preparation as part of the estimate. The tile installer and plumber should have a clear understanding of the drain and water-management details before the shower is tiled.

Layout, grout and finishing choices

Choose tile orientation, grout colour and trims together. A balanced layout at corners and niches helps avoid awkward narrow cuts. Changes of plane and movement joints need an appropriate detail; they should not simply be treated as ordinary grout joints.

For inspiration, see decorative bathroom walls and hexagon mosaic in our gallery. A photo is useful for discussing the appearance, while the actual tile and assembly specifications establish what is appropriate for your room.

Preparing for your bathroom estimate

Send photos of the whole room and close-ups of any leaks, cracked tile or damaged joints. Describe removal, plumbing changes, a new drain, floor heating and whether this is the only bathroom in the home. The estimate should distinguish tile installation from work performed by other trades.

Keep time for preparation, waterproofing requirements, grout and curing before the shower is used. Read our installation timeline guide and shower waterproofing questions for items to discuss.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tile shower niches and benches?

Discuss them at the design and estimate stage. Their size, position, backing and waterproofing details should be resolved before tile installation.

Is bathroom regrouting enough to fix a leak?

Not necessarily. A leak can originate behind the finish, at plumbing or at waterproofing details. The cause should be assessed before treating it as a grout-only repair.

When can I use a newly tiled shower?

Follow the curing and return-to-service requirements of the installed waterproofing, mortar, grout and sealant products. Ask for project-specific instructions rather than using a universal number of days.
