How to Choose a Tile Installer

Comparing tile installers is easier when every estimate describes the same work. Use these questions to discuss a bathroom, backsplash or floor project in Toronto, Burlington or the GTA, and to understand what an installation price actually covers.

Describe the project before comparing prices

Start with the room, approximate area, existing surface and preferred tile. Include removal, wall or floor repairs, waterproofing, heating and finishing details. Tell each installer whether the property will be occupied and whether there are condo access rules or other trades to coordinate.

Send the same information to each company. If one estimate covers prepared surfaces and another includes demolition and substrate work, the totals are not measuring the same scope. Our cost guide helps identify the items to compare.

Ask about preparation and wet-area details

Ask what the installer expects to find below the existing finish and how additional preparation will be handled. For a shower, ask about the selected waterproofing system, corners, penetrations and drain connection. For a floor, ask about substrate condition and height at adjoining rooms.

A useful answer relates to your room and chosen products. A promise that every tile can be installed on any surface is not a substitute for an assessment. Read waterproofing and preparation before your discussion.

Review relevant work and design decisions

Look for photographs that help you discuss the type of work you want: backsplash edges, niches, tile transitions or patterned layouts. Ask how tile direction, grout colour, trims and cuts will be agreed before installation. A project photo can show the finish, but it cannot establish the concealed assembly or terms of another job.

Explore Vule Tile’s gallery and bring specific examples you like. Explain which detail matters to you so the estimate can address it.

Confirm responsibilities in writing

  • Who supplies the tile, grout, trims and installation materials?
  • Who handles demolition, disposal, furniture and site protection?
  • What preparation is included, and what needs inspection?
  • Who coordinates plumbing, electrical work and building access?
  • How are changes, payment stages, scheduling and any applicable warranty terms documented?
  • What curing and cleaning instructions will be provided at handover?

Ask the contractor directly about the documents or qualifications relevant to your project and building. Keep the agreed scope and product information with your renovation records.

Discuss schedule and communication

Confirm when the room needs to be ready, when materials must arrive and how long the area may be unavailable. Ask who will communicate if concealed damage changes the work. Product curing and other trades can affect the finish date even after the visible tile is laid.
