A chipped tile, missing grout and a leak need different responses. Before choosing a repair, look at where the defect is, whether it is spreading and whether there are signs of an issue below the visible finish.
Record the visible problem
Take one photo of the whole room and close-ups of the damage. Note when it appeared, whether a tile was struck and whether the same joint has been repaired before. Mention loose tile, dampness, staining or changes after using a shower.
If you have spare matching tile, include the product label and available quantity. The details help establish whether a straightforward local repair is worth considering.
A crack can have more than one cause
Impact damage and movement in an assembly can produce different repair needs. A line of cracks or repeated grout failure should prompt an assessment of the substrate and joints rather than an assumption that only the surface needs changing.
Replacing visible tile may leave an underlying problem in place. Our preparation page explains why the existing surface and installation system matter.
Leaks need a source assessment
Water can come from plumbing, junctions, drain details or the waterproofing assembly. Regrouting the visible surface cannot be assumed to repair a concealed problem. Explain where water appears and when it occurs, and arrange the appropriate assessment before choosing the repair scope.
Read questions about shower waterproofing for items to discuss. Any plumbing work should be coordinated with the trade responsible for it.
Matching and the limits of a local repair
A replacement tile may differ from an older batch, and new grout may look different from grout already in service. Matching material, surrounding condition and access influence what can be achieved. Discuss the likely appearance before agreeing to a patch repair.
When damage is extensive or the source is concealed, a larger replacement area may need to be considered. An assessment should explain the problem the proposed scope is intended to address.
