Shower Waterproofing: Questions Before Tiling

Floral bathroom wall tile, green accents and small hexagon mosaic floor

The most important shower details can be hidden by the finished tile. Before installation, ask how the shower assembly will manage water and how the tile work connects to the drain, plumbing and backing.

What system is proposed for this shower?

Ask which backing and waterproofing components will be used and why they suit the design. The installer should be able to discuss the actual system and its product requirements. Mixing components is not a reason to assume compatibility.

Tile and grout are the visible finish; they should not be treated as the complete waterproofing plan. The waterproofing service page gives an overview of the preparation discussion.

How are junctions and penetrations handled?

Ask about corners, seams, pipe penetrations and the drain connection. Niches, benches, curbs and changes in plane introduce further details that need a planned treatment. Decisions should be made before the tile hides the assembly.

The plumber and tile installer need a clear understanding of the drain and water-management details. A change to the drain or shower layout should be discussed before installation proceeds.

Which checks and waiting periods apply?

Ask what inspections or checks are required for the selected products and project, and when they fit into the schedule. Manufacturer instructions establish application and curing requirements; the plan needs to accommodate them.

Schluter’s shower-system information illustrates why a shower is an assembly of components. Refer to the requirements of the exact system installed in your bathroom rather than treating one manufacturer’s product details as universal.

What will be recorded at handover?

Keep the system and product information, cleaning guidance and any agreed installation records with your renovation documents. Ask when the shower can be used and which maintenance details require attention.

If an existing shower leaks, regrouting should not be assumed to fix a problem behind the tile. Assess the source before choosing a repair.

Prepare your bathroom enquiry

Send the current shower photos, dimensions, intended tile, drain or plumbing changes and details of niches or benches. Mention whether the bathroom will remain occupied and whether it is the only bathroom in the property.
